Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

I have noticed that my potatoes are chitting very slowly this year.

Chitting Potatoes. My potatoes seem in no hurry to chit; they made a start at it but the progress is slow. I think it is the low temperatures here. Mine are in a shed beneath the window, I cannot move them into the house as they will then be too warm.

You just cannot plan for the weather, and the soil has to be a certain temperature for them to start into growth once you have planted them. I am wondering if it is going to take a while for the soil to warm up in March it might be worth covering the area where the first lot of spuds are going in to warm it up a bit faster. Will decide on that next week.
