Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

Been a good week for preparing planting areas on the allotment

The weather has varied between wet and windy and almost spring like this past week, so on the good days work has been done on clearing any remaining  weeds and preparing raised beds for planting.

This time of year the annual weeds have not got into growing mode yet, but the grasses and perennial weeds are easily spotted and can be dug out while the soil is still moist. Once my plot dries out more, it is a sandy soil, the perennial weeds are almost impossible to dig out. When the annual weeds start to appear if most of the perennial weeds have been cleared then a hoe can be used to chop the tops off the annual weeds. Well in theory it sounds easy, but still requires a bit of effort to keep ahead of the opportunist weeds.
