Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

My vegetable plot, ready, steady, go, oh no

now just when I was thinking Spring is in the air. I wake up this morning to find frost on the lawn a thin coating of white on everything. Yesterday I had convinced myself that unlike last year, this one will be an early spring and so an early start on the allotment. I have put that idea on hold for the time being.

At times like this,  I wish I had a green house or summer house where I could start the plants of in seed trays and gain a bit of a head start. As it is my only seed protection is a tiny polythene covered  greenhouse, that you can buy for about ten pound. Today,  I am off to the allotment to put the old double glazed window frames over a raised bed so that I can use it as a cold frame. I will put a layer of horse muck in the bottom of the raised-bed and cover that with cardboard, in my version of the Victorian hotbed method of raising plants. Then when I am ready I will stand the seed trays in the 'hot-bed' raised bed.  It is somewhat  improvisational, but that is  something that vegetable growers and allotment holders especially are usually good at.
