Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

Grow your own food to save money

There are lots of ways to save money on food, one of them is to grow some of it yourself. If you want to grow your own vegetables start with the things that are considered easy and that probably means something quick to grow to start with.  OK how much to you spend on salads? I would say salad leaves sell at least for a £1or £2 a bag. Then you often waste some of the salad leaves you bought when they go floppy in the bottom of the bag, it is so wasteful when they are easy to grow.
All you need is a patch of the garden or some compost in a pot or container and a packet of cut and grow again salad leaves, you just sprinkle the seeds over the surface on the compost in the container or if you want in rows on the soil in the garden. Cover lightly with a thin layer of soil or compost, follow the directions on the packet of salad seeds. Now all you have to do is to keep them seeds watered, do n't flood them though, and soon you will see the seeds starting to emerge and grow.

When the salad leaves are big enough you can pick or cut the individual leaves, just picking enough for the meal or lunch box your are preparing. That's it really, just watch and the cut and grow again salad leaves will regrow several times before you need to re-sow another patch of salad leaves. If you start the next batch of seeds off before the first ones have been exhausted you will have a continuous supply of cut and grow again salad leaves.
