Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

You can plant autumn onion sets and garlic in October

This month is the time to plant autumn onion sets, if you plant these they will be ready earlier next year than the ones that get planted later on.

It is also a good time to plant out garlic in the vegetable garden or on the allotment.
Garlic prefers a free draining soil and a sunny position.

Time for Planting Garlic.
For anyone planting garlic for the first time, and not sure how to plant garlic in the garden.

Firstly - split the garlic bulb into its individual 'cloves' and plant each one separately in the ground.

The months you can plant garlic are October, November, December, January and February. However remember that the ground may be frozen in the later months and also if you plant it too late and it misses the cold weather it can fail to 'split' and form the new bulb that is growing can fail to turn into cloves, as it is said that it takes a cold spell of weather to achieve this.
