Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

Winter and there are still jobs to do on the vegetable plot.

We had two good weather days for tidying the plot. Now the snow has cleared the opportunity has arrived to have a tidy up session on the allotment.
Here are the jobs we did on the plot in these last few days of January:

  • Areas of the vegetable plot that had weeds emerging were worked over with a hoe.
  • The compost heap got a turning over to help mix up the contents as this is good practise with the type of compost heaps that I have on the allotment.
  • The autumn raspberry patch had a few blackberries emerging, regrowth from the few roots we missed when we cleared the area. Hopefully that will be the last of the blackberry roots as they are a nuisance if they start to grow alongside the raspberry canes.
  • Tidied up a few areas that seem to have got a bit out of hand.
Came home and had a lovely cup of tea, not sure why it always tastes better after time spent working outside. The cup of tea was accompanied with a slice of brown bread toast heaped with home made fruit compote which is my favourite snack.

I hope we get more days like this, as it gives a chance to get ahead before the busier times on the allotment arrive.
