Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

Cut and Grow Again Salad Leaves.

Although the number of things I grow on the plot declines in winter time I still like to pick and eat things I have nurtured. Salad leaves are easy to grow even on a window ledge in a kitchen. you just pick or cut the number of leaves you want to use. This way of growing lettuce and salad leaves saves waste. It also adds a bit of colour to the kitchen and is handy when you want something healthy to make a quick sandwich or salad.

You can grow the leaves in any suitable flower pot or container. Turn the growing leaves regularly as they will grow towards the light and make sure they are on a bright window ledge in your house and not in the shade. You might need to move them away from the glass some days, if you are still getting really hot sunny days where you live.
