Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

Reason Why Composting is good for your garden as well as the environment.

Composting waste such as vegetable peelings, garden trimmings, cardboard and other items that are suitable for adding to the compost is good for your garden as well as being eco-friendly.

  • Whatever ends up on your compost heap is not making the trip to a landfill-site and taking up valuable space there.

  • Eventually you will reap the reward for your composting efforts by being able to use nutrient rich compost on your garden/vegetable patch. This valuable resource has been produced at no cost to you apart from a little bit of time and effort.
When you grow and harvest from the soil it is important to add back to it to replace what growing has taken out - compost is ideal for this, much better than throwing chemicals at it. You are adding nutrients and humus to enrich the soil. More on this soon.

In the meantime if you wish to read more about composting I have a couple of articles about it on my HubPages articles - you can find them via the links here or through my profile page there on the HubPages.
