Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

Strawberry Plants. August is a good month to propagate...

Strawberry plants are easy to grow from the runners that come off your established strawberry plants.

  • You can either grow the runner on in situ by pegging them down into the soil, hold them by pinning the runner down with a piece of wire bent into a hairpin/horse-shoe shape. Once the new plant has established roots you can move it to its new position in the garden.
  • The other method used to propagate strawberry plants is to pot up the new 'runner' plant in plant compost. Snip of the connecting runner once the plant is rooted.
Another job to do this month is to tidy up the strawberry plants once they have finished producing fruit i.e. cut the leaves back and throw away the old foliage, it is best not too compost it in case it is harbouring pests or disease.  You can feed the strawberries at this stage too.

You can order strawberry plants now - if you need new plants for planting in the autumn.

This is also the time to cut back the summer fruiting raspberries - removing the old canes and leaving the new which may need tying inot to the wires you have to support them.

This does not apply to autumn fruiting raspberries as they are getting ready to produce their autumn fruits.
