Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Read about growing your fruit and vegetables here on my growing your own food pages.

Composting terms Greens and Browns.

When making compost the things you are adding to the heap are often described to as greens or browns.

When composting -

  • Greens are the materials that are rich in nitrogen.
  • Browns are the carbon rich ones.
So greens would include grass cuttings.
Fruit and
vegetables peel and scraps.
Used coffee grounds and tea bags.
Cut flowers.
Plant waste from the garden as long as it is not diseased.

The Browns would include straw, ripped up cardboard, paper bags and paper.
