It has been a good summer for the cabbage white butterfly.
But not so good for those who grow cabbages.
The sight of the white butterflies covering the lavender bushes was beautiful to see, as I filled the watering can up, yet again at the tap. Their white wings in the sunlight against the dark purple of the lavender flowers entertained me as I waited for the water to fill the two watering cans. Alas, the resulting caterpillars found nestling within the leaves of our cabbages was not such a wonderful thing to see. They are so badly infested that they are one of the few things we have grown and discarded. This happened even though the cabbages were netted for protection. They had found a way in at the openings at either end. Lesson for next year, I must remember to tightly close all the places that a cabbage white can discover and enter through.
