- well not now as I am writing this at night but we have a good crop of raspberries that are ripening up well this year. This week have picked about the same amount of raspberries that would have cost over £3 to buy in the shops and there are still more on the cane waiting to ripen soon.
Autumn fruiting raspberries are relatively easy to grow they just look a bit untidier than their summer fruiting relatives. It is worth growing them if you have enough space for them, as they fruit at a time of year when they are useful by themselves or mixed with other fruits.

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Growing your own fruit means that you can pick...
which varieties you grow. When you buy fruit bushes to plant this autumn think about the varieties that will be most useful to you. The fruit your buy in the supermarket is selected for many things apart from flavour. If you are growing fruit for your own table/use you can select the varieties with flavour as the main priority.
I have just made a tasty compote from the first years pickings of a red gooseberry that I planted a while ago.
If I plant another gooseberry bush it will be this variety rather than a green one, as I prefer the flavour of it.
The summer raspberries are over, the heat finished them early I believe. The autumn raspberries are starting to form on the bushes. The summer fruiting canes need cutting back soon. The greenish stems are the new growth and the woody ones that the fruit was on are the old growth.
