We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Reasons to grow Green Manure, a good time to sow a green manure crop - phacelia seeds

rather than leave bare patches of soil on the vegetable plot I will be sowing green manure  seeds this week.
Reasons for growing  green manure plants.


A green manure crop fulfils several purposes -

  1. Improves the soil when it is dug in.
  2. Adds humus to the soil.
  3. Adds nutrients to the soil.
  4. Prevents the soil from erosion in heavy rain
  5. Helps to prevent the growth of weeds by blocking out the light and providing competition for them.
