Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Time to plan what goes where on the allotment...

Making Plans for planting our vegetables in 2013.

Better late than never, I have drawn up a plan of what was planted in different areas of the allotment last year. This layout plan has helped me to determine what can and cannot go in certain areas. The point of this is crop rotation as it is unwise to grow the same type of vegetables in the same patch of soil in the next growing year, or even the one after that. Which for example means not growing potatoes where they were growing last year, but of course the fruiting plants do remain in the same locations.

We are going to give brassicas a try this year thinking of trying sprouting broccoli and maybe Brussel sprouts.

Some garlic is already planted and growing and later there will be onions to go in.
Hoping for good weather this week to get some time on the plot, preparing it for the planting months. Time to look at the vegetable seed brochures, if I do that too soon I get a bit too keen on quantities. Having looked at the plan of the veggie plot hopefully I will be more realistic.
