Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

We grow our own fruit and vegetables for our meals for as much of the year as we can. Without a greenhouse we have to buy shop food in the winter months but in the spring, summer and autumn we often have enough to share with family and friends.

Sandy Soil and Dry Summers.

Sandy soil is one of the most difficult to produce good result from when the weather is dry. We have some good results bit other crops have not done so well. The summer raspberries provided us with a bumper crop this year. We enjoyed them and even had enough to freeze some down to use later. The autumn fruiting raspberries do not look so promising, as they seem to have produced a mass of growth and foliage but hardly any flowers. Maybe they are just being a bit slow in flowering this year, only time will tell.

I was surprised to wake up to the sound of heavy rainfall last night. It seems so long since it rained hard enough to be useful to the soil on the allotment and the plants there. Despite more rainfall today I doubt it has made much difference to the plot. I have been watering plants as a favour for someone this week, having noticed that the leaves on some of their plants were showing signs of suffering from a lack of moisture. Even the water butt was empty due to the lack of rainfall available to be collected.
