Rhubarb is easy to grow, the plant lasts for years dying back in winter time but re-emerging in the warmer weather. If you have the space for growing it, once planted it just needs keeping free of weeds, it is one of the easiest things to grow. If it starts to come into flower remove the emerging flower spike as the energy that will go into producing flower and seeds is diverted away from producing stems.
When harvesting pull the stems with a gentle twist, taking care not to damage the new stems growing around the one you are harvesting. Discard the leaves.
The leaves of rhubarb plants can be put on the compost heap but should not be eaten, use only the stems.
At some time in the summer you will need to stop harvesting the stems as the levels oxalic acid in them rises.

Hi 2uesday-just growing rhubarb for the first time this year!Some genius told me it takes three years for it to be harvestable (sounds a bit odd ...but ?)

My rhubarb patch is doing well this year (planted up 2009).
I planted the rhubarb patch up from the old crowns I found among the weeds on the allotment. I have heard that it is best not to harvest from them in the first year until they have become established.
