How to Grow Onions and Shallots from sets.

this will be my third growing season for onions and shallots and I will plant some of the onions the traditional way and some by the easier method I mention and I will compare the results when I harvest them.

Planning what to buy to grow in the coming season... potatoes, onions, shallots and garlic...

Now is the time to be buying seed potatoes, shallots, onion sets and garlic for planting soon.

I will be planting Pentland Javelin seed potatoes for my first earlies later this year, they grow well in my sandy soil.
If you leave the purchase or ordering of them too late then your choice is more limited as they sometimes sell out of the more popular varieties of seed potato. 

Shallots are used in cooking here as often as onions and I am hoping to buy some of the 'banana' shaped ones this year as well as having a nice flavour I like

Now is a good time to decide what variety of potatoes you would like to grow this year.

Do not leave your decision too long as the most popular varieties sell out first.

Do n't forget that you need to plan where you will be putting the seed potatoes to chit. Keep saving the old egg cartons to put them your potaotes in when you start to chit them.... more on chitting potaotes soon.

Onion sets and shallott sets are also available now... and garlic which is another theing that is easy to grow. However I will not plant while the frost is in the soil/ground.
